The NFL’s Barry Richardson and MUSC’s Heart Health program host family 5K FUN run/walk for childhood obesity awareness Saturday June 13

Charleston, S.C.— 35.1% of children in South Carolina ages 2-17 are overweight or obese. This event will be the start of ongoing change to improve the statistics. Come run or walk to join in the fight against childhood obesity. This event is a 5K run/walk that will raise funds to benefit the Heart Health Program of MUSC’s Children’s Hospital and the Team Richardson Foundation. In collaboration with the Team Richardson Foundation’s Hanging with Pros program, participants will get to meet NFL player Barry Richardson. Before the run/walk, there will be a fun warm-up with stretching. During the run/walk there will be water stations and healthy snacks. Raffle tickets may be purchased at any time for the post-event prize giveaway.

The cost to participate is $20 for individuals and $65 for groups of 4 or more. The fee includes a t-shirt and race packet. Online registration is open now! Activities begin at 8:30am and the run/walk begins at 9:30am. The event will be held at Hampton Park in beautiful downtown Charleston.

The Heart Health Program of the MUSC Children’s Hospital is a non-profit family-oriented program that teaches a behavioral approach to weight management for children who are overweight/obese. The purpose of the program is to help children learn to be healthy and reach a healthy body weight through an active lifestyle and good food choices. To learn more about Heart Health, please visit

The Team Richardson Foundation is a charitable organization founded by NFL offensive tackle Barry Richardson and wife Asia Richardson. Team Richardson’s mission is focused on providing positive services to underserved youth in an effort to decrease childhood obesity (Hanging with Pros Program), community violence, and youth incarceration. Through the promotion of positive mentorships with professionals and other structured activities, the Richardson’s believe these initiatives will enhance holistic growth and enable individuals to reach their full potential.
