With the first month of 2017 halfway over, we have driven 780 of the new hospital’s 1,300 pilings and will likely wrap up this phase of the project by the end of March, just in time for the blooming of the azaleas, dogwoods and daffodils.
Steel for the new hospital is scheduled to arrive in early February. Barring any surprises or weather delays, we should begin erecting that steel in by second week of February. This will be an exciting new phase of the project and will be a major focus for the construction team throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2017. As the steel structures begin to rise from the ground, we will also begin to more readily imagine what’s possible for the future of the families and children of Charleston.
In addition, a tower crane has been assembled and is on site, soon to be joined by a second crane next month. The second crane is expected to be the tallest crane in Charleston once it is erected —a testament to our construction progress and our journey to the greatly anticipated Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and the Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion! We are looking forward to an exciting 2017 at MUSC and will keep you posted on our progress and movement toward opening day in 2019.
